Managing your symptoms at home

Most common infections like coughs, colds, sore throats and flu get better on their own without antibiotics.

In many cases, our immune system will do a better job of clearing the infection without the need for extra treatment. There are a few things we can do at home to help manage some symptoms:

  • Simple paracetamol-based products are a great way to lower temperatures, reduce headaches and also help with general aches and pains.
  • For nasal congestion it may be appropriate to use an oral decongestant tablet or a product such as drops or sprays that goes directly up the nose.
  • For babies and young children it may be best to use simple saline nasal drops which can help relieve all that congestion and snot. It’s a gentle way to loosen things up and makes it a little bit easier for them to breathe and feed.

If symptoms last longer than they normally would, or you are worried about a young child or elderly relative, speak to your local pharmacist for advice.
